New Beef: Katt Williams Vs. Steve Harvey

Katt Williams has been exhibiting behavior lately that was so unlike him that he was committed to a mental hospital for evaluation — those facts make this story even more interesting:

A new standup comic beef has emerged between Katt Williams and Steve Harvey - mostly on Williams’ part - that is expected to be settled during a head-to-head battle on New Year’s Eve in Detroit.

Instigating from the sideline is fellow comic Jamie Foxx, who joined co-hosts of his Sirius XM FoxxHole radio show on Dec. 19 to comment on the absurdity of Williams calling out Harvey in advance of their Dec. 31 show.

First, Foxx plays a clip of Williams dissing Harvey. “I wanna apologize for what’s gonna happen,” Williams said of the joint comedy gig. “But the second that you get on stage, I need you to understand that that’s your final time as the ‘King of Comedy.’ Water seeks its own level, you can’t stop it playboy. It is what it is, so I hope you’re ready. I hope you got a team of writers. You gonna need about six or seven of ‘em….”

Steve Harvey then calls in and says he’s baffled by the whole thing. “I’ve always been cool with Katt. He said in an interview that back in LA, I didn’t know who he was,” Harvey told Foxx and crew. “I mean understand, I didn’t know who he was when I was on the radio in LA. He hadn’t been in any movies or anything, and the brother was just not that known. He was talking about me in the clubs, and I just asked on the radio, whoever Katt Williams is, to call me.

“He called me, we straightened it out. We became friends. We’ve been cool ever since, so I thought.”

Comedian Katt Williams Commited To Mental Institution ?

Something definitely isn’t right with Katt:

Actor and comedian Katt Williams, of movies “First Sunday” and “Norbit” fame, apparently has made a stop in Sumter. Unfortunately it was not for one of his stand-up comedy routines but rather a visit with family members that allegedly ended with a psychiatric evaluation at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The comedian, known for appearances on MTV’s “Wild ‘n Out” and BET’s “Comic View” has made media reports recently for exhibiting erratic behavior, including not showing for an appearance on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in New York on Nov. 4 and being arrested on weapons charges later that week after a traffic stop. On Friday, he turned up in Sumter and allegedly underwent a mental health evaluation for a possible hospital commitment, at the urging of local family members. This was after run-ins with both city and county law enforcement.

The day’s bizarre events began with a call to police early in the morning.

Sumter Police Department Maj. Perry Herod said officers responded to a call in reference to suspicious behavior by Williams, 35, on Friday morning at the Mount Vernon Inn.

“And officers did talk with him, and then my understanding is he went on his own to Tuomey Hospital,” Herod said.

“Basically we just received a call in reference to a possible suspicious person, but that’s the extent of the dealings we had with him,” said Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson.

Patterson said Williams was trying to acquire a room at the motel when hotel employees called at around 8:30 a.m. due to his strange attire: a bathrobe and a towel wrapped around his head. After determining no criminal activity was taking place, officers left.

“He asked for some directions, which he was given, and we departed,” she said.

Williams appeared on the doorsteps of attorney Garryl Deas’ office at 201 N. Main St. around 9 a.m. Friday, after his encounter with police, according to Deas. Deas said the actor came and solicited the attorney’s help, though he said he has not been hired to represent Williams.

During this brief conversation, Deas said Williams told him he felt the police were “attempting to violate his rights” and he was interested in retaining Deas’ representation. Williams also went on to talk about his entertainment career and revealed there were people who thought he was missing because he had failed to report to some engagements, Deas said. The actor said there were even rumors he had perished in a plane crash, which Deas said was obviously not true.

“He was alive and in color in my office this morning,” he said.

Deas said he talked with Williams until about 9:30 a.m. when the attorney had to leave for a court appearance. Williams asked if he could wait for Deas, and Deas told him he could, Deas said.

When Deas returned to his office at about 10:30 a.m., Williams was waiting for him. By this time, Deas said, Williams’ behavior had changed.

“His demeanor was a little troubled,” Deas said. He said the actor seemed “disoriented.”

About that time, family or close friends of Williams arrived to try to take him to the hospital for mental evaluation, Deas said. He said the family was seeking to have the actor committed. He was under the impression the family members were a teenaged daughter and the daughter’s mother. Williams, however, did not want to listen to their urging that he visit the hospital, Deas said.

His erratic behavior continued.

“He just said that he doesn’t trust anyone anymore,” Deas said. He said he thought “everyone has turned against him. He wasn’t really coherent.”

By that point, the actor was “speaking gibberish,” Deas said, though he declined to guess whether the actor was intoxicated.

Deas said the family was seeking an order from a probate judge to force him to be seen for a mental evaluation. Sumter Probate Judge Dale Atkinson, however, said neither he nor any of his staff issued a pickup order for anyone by the name of Katt Williams.

Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said, however, that an order was issued by the probate court and that because his department becomes involved with these type of matters, his office was called.

Dennis said the call came in around noon and deputies arrived to transport Williams to the hospital. Though he was vocal in his desire not to go, Williams was not physically aggressive.

She could not reveal whether Williams or his family had been in contact with them, but Kathleen Higgins, clinical director for Santee Wateree Mental Health Center, said in order for someone to be psychiatrically committed, one has to be assessed by a mental health worker, “and then a doctor has to sign the commitment papers.”

Two psychiatric physicians currently have privileges at Tuomey: Drs. William King and David Justice. Tuomey, however, would not provide any information on whether Williams was treated there.

“I don’t have any information on that patient,” said Holly Chase in Tuomey’s public relations.

To be committed, someone must be viewed as being at imminent risk of committing suicide or homicide, Higgins said. Should Williams be committed, he might go to a number of hospitals in South Carolina, including the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital in Columbia or private institutions such as Three Rivers Behavioral Healthcare or Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia, the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston or McLeod Regional Medical Center’s behavioral center in Darlington. Though these are not the only behavioral institutions in the state, they are the places local patients are most often sent, Higgins said.

Higgins said a legal commitment spans 72 hours, and after that time a patient must go before a judge to determine whether to be hospitalized or not.

One of Williams’ most recent public appearances was at a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City, which he made just in time, after being released from jail on weapons charges. He is scheduled to appear on Nov. 20 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and on Dec. 31 in Detroit with comedian Steve Harvey. Williams has reportedly said the Dec. 31 show will be his last stand-up show.

His publicist Yvette Shearer, with Shearer Public Relations, did not return a call for comment by press time.

We hope and pray that he agrees to treatment and gets the help that he obviously needs.

Comedian Katt Williams Arrested On Gun Charges

Tiny comedian Katt Williams has been arrested on weapons charges in midtown Manhattan after police say they pulled him over for driving a car without a license plate.

The 35-year-old entertainer was released on bail Thursday in time to make it for his show at Carnegie Hall. He told the audience that he “just got out of jail.”

Authorities say that a handgun was found in Williams’ car after he was stopped for the alleged traffic violation.

Charles Ross, his attorney, did not immediately return a call requesting comment early Friday.

Williams is best known for his role in the movie “Friday After Next”. He also voices “A Pimp Named Slickback” in “The Boondocks” animated television series.

The Real Reason Katt Williams Was A No Show At BET Hip Hop Awards

The Real Reason Katt Williams Was A No Show At BET Hip Hop Awards

Want to know the real reason you won’t see Katt Williams hosting BET’s Hip Hop Awards tonight? The comic pitched a serious hissy and walked off the show, according to insiders.

Williams claimed earlier this week that he turned over his hosting job to T-Pain after losing a break-dancing contest to the rapper.

But sources say he actually bailed after an angry face-off with BET execs before the show’s taping in Atlanta last Saturday.

“Katt has become difficult now that he’s a megastar,” one source tells us. “He was very demanding during rehearsals. He really berated one female member of the production company. He launched into a verbal assault on her in front of other people. I mean, he read her the riot act.

“Then he left the set and said he wouldn’t return unless she apologized. She wouldn’t. BET and the production company backed her up. Katt wouldn’t come back. Nobody was willing to budge.

“So the night before the show, they had no host. They were scrambling to find somebody. At 1 a.m., the night before the show, they called T-Pain. He agreed to do it, and started rehearsing the next morning for the show that evening.”

In the interest of future relations with Williams, executive producer Stephen Hill agreed to the break-dancing cover story, according to sources.

“It was crazy,” Hill told BET.com. “We were all out at the club Friday night - T-Pain, Katt Williams, an Emmanuel Lewis impersonator and me - fluids flowing, music all loud. Suddenly Pain, having bought us some drinks, challenged Katt to a break-dancing battle.”

Playing along, Pain told the Web site: “Folks have underestimated me for years. In rapping, in singing … and now in break dancing!”

Williams claimed, “I’ve had a great time hosting the show for the last two years. [I] was looking forward to hosting this year. I never thought T-Pain would win a break-dancing battle with me.”

A BET rep declined further comment. A publicist for Williams, who plays Carnegie Hall on Nov. 6, didn’t return a call.

Katt Williams A No Show At BET Hip Hop Awards

Katt Williams was scheduled to host this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards for the third consecutive year. But the permed funny man’s absence has the rumor mill going.

T-Pain showed up to host this year’s event, and although entertaining, the big switch had people talking about what happened to Katt. With explanations ranging from the comedian being arrested to a possible argument with the powers that be over at BET, no one really knows what happened to the original host.

BET’s blogger, Low Key, wrote,”Says Stephen Hill, ‘So we were all hanging out last night and Katt bets T-Pain that he couldn’t beat him in a break dance battle. Not knowing T-Pain was an extremely DOPE break dancer, Katt thought it was an easy win. T-Pain said if I win, I get to host the Hip Hop Awards.’ Judging by this post, I’m guessing you’ve figured out what the outcome of the battle was.”

At press time, Katt had issued no statement on what went down.
