Singer/rapper M.I.A. has confirmed that she’s indeed pregnant with her first child.

The singer, real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, sparked rumors that she was expecting after appearing at a New York gig on Saturday night with a bulging belly.

Following her set, she told Pitchfork Media, “I’m creating a baby”, but M.I.A., who is set to marry The Exit singer/guitarist Benjamin Brewer insists that her plans for marriage came before she discovered she was having a child.

She adds, “I got engaged first, then I got pregnant, kids.”

And the 31-year-old admits her baby news coincided with her single Paper Planes doing well in the charts.

She says, “When I found out I was pregnant and Paper Planes was in the iTunes top 10, it seemed like the whole world was reshuffled in one week, and all my plans went out the window.

“I’ve got two kids, that’s what it feels like. And that’s the lesson - you can’t make plans.”

The star is currently working on a follow up to her latest album Kala but insists that she has to attend to some family business first: “I have to go see my family and show them the belly.” M.I.A. is currently enjoying the success of rapper T.I.’s ‘Swagger Like Us” which features a sample from “Paper Planes”. She has been invited to perform the song with T.I. and the success of the song has made M.I.A. a star in the U.S.

M.I.A. performed at the Diesel xXx “Rock and Roll Circus” in Brooklyn on Saturday. It appears as though the “Paper Planes” rapper is pregnant, although there is no official confirmation from her camp. She got engaged to musician Benjamin Brewer over the summer.

Earlier this month, M.I.A. addressed rumors of her pregnancy in Rolling Stone. “I’m kind of putting on weight. That could be it. I haven’t made it to the counter yet to buy a test. But when I do, I’ll let you know.”

After the success of her smash single “Paper Planes,” Interscope Records is preparing to rerelease M.I.A.’s second album Kala on November 4th. The repackaged album includes six new bonus songs. The album was originally released in August 2007 and debuted at No. 18 with 29,000 copies sold the first week.

The Sri Lankan artist will be performing at Diesel’s xXx “Rock and Roll Circus” along with N.E.R.D. in New York. “Paper Planes” currently holds the No. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100. The single got even more attention when rapper T.I. sampled part of the song for his single “Swagger Like Us” which features Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. T.I.’s song caught afire on the streets and has inspired remixes from artists such as P. Diddy and Jermaine Dupri. The song was originally supposed to be included on T.I.’s “Paper Trail” album but is now listed on Jay-Z’s new album. “Paper Planes” currently holds the No. 5 position on the Billboard Hot 100.
